Revolut / Wise vs a Polish bank — what to choose as a foreigner (2026)
Updated: 2026-10-02 · ~2 min read
How a neo-bank differs from a bank
Revolut and Wise operate in Poland as e-money institutions (KNF licence) — they are not banks. Consequences:
- No BFG deposit guarantee: money in a bank deposit account is protected up to €100,000 per person and per bank; at an e-money institution client funds are held separately under the e-money law — a different legal regime.
- It is a money account — not every banking product is available (no classic term deposits, no standard lending).
- Near 100% online opening: passport + selfie + address proof; no branch visit.
What neo-banks do well
- Multicurrency: balances in PLN, EUR, USD, GBP and more; FX conversion with a spread usually lower than bank FX.
- Revolut has a Polish IBAN (PL…) — you can receive PLN transfers into it like a normal account (with limits on some operations).
- Wise sends money to 70+ countries “on local rails” (e.g. to the US/UK faster and cheaper than classic SWIFT) — check the current fee table in the app.
- Multicurrency card for travel; ATM cash withdrawals (limits and fees per terms).
What does not work, or needs a second account
| Need | Neo-bank (Revolut/Wise) | Polish bank |
|---|---|---|
| Salary from a PL employer | possible, but HR usually asks for a bank account + PESEL — check with them | certain |
| Standing orders (utilities, rent) | partly works; some firms require a bank account | certain |
| Deposit guarantee (BFG) | no | yes (€100,000) |
| Large single transfers / B2B | limits per terms | standard |
| Opening with passport, no visit | yes (online KYC) | usually yes (see the online-verification article) |
| Joint or minor accounts | limited | standard |
Practical recommendation
- Main settlement account (PLN) at a Polish bank — salary, utilities, rent, tax office.
- Neo-bank as a complement — travel currencies, cheaper transfers home, fast FX.
- Before moving larger sums: check per-operation and monthly limits plus the fee table in the app — they change more often than bank fee schedules.
