How to Get a PESEL Number in Poland (2026)
Updated: 2026-10-01 · ~2 min read
What PESEL is and why it matters
PESEL is Poland's 11-digit personal identification number. It is not the same as an ID card or a tax ID — but many systems expect it: opening some bank features (e.g. parts of BLIK), registering a business (NIP), getting tax residency, or claiming NFZ medical reimbursement. A bank account itself does not require PESEL (see the basic payment account rule), but having one simplifies life in Poland.
Who can apply
- Anyone with a legal stay in Poland: work permit, visa, residence permit (karta pobytu), temporary protection (for Ukrainians — "LT" status).
- EU citizens: PESEL is not mandatory for them, but they can obtain it (useful for taxes, NFZ, some bank features).
- Without legal stay status: in practice you will not be issued a PESEL — the system ties it to registered/resident persons.
Where and how to apply
- Go to your local civil registry office (urząd stanu cywilnego, USC) for the address you are registered at (or where you stay temporarily).
- Fill in the paper PESEL registration form; bring your passport (and a copy), plus proof of address in Poland (rental agreement, zameldowanie certificate).
- It is free. Typical processing time: about 14 days; you receive the number in writing.
Easier routes
- ePUAP (government portal) — some steps can be done online if you have a verified profile (bank-ID or qualified eID).
- Some banks can initiate PESEL registration after account opening — ask at the branch; this shortcut exists in several offers.
| Situation | Documents to bring |
|---|---|
| EU citizen | national ID card or passport + proof of address |
| Non-EU with residence permit | passport + karta pobytu + proof of address |
| Ukrainian with temporary protection | Ukrainian passport/biometric ID + LT status document + proof of address (or zameldowanie) |
