| Method | Where it works | Typical cost & speed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEPA (EUR) | within EU/EEA/Switzerland/Iceland/Liechtenstein/Monaco | 0–15 PLN, 1 day (often instant) | EU residents, regular EUR remittances |
| SWIFT cross-border | worldwide, any currency | ~15–40 PLN + FX spread; correspondent bank may add its fee; 1–3 days | one-off larger transfers, non-EUR currencies |
| Remittance services (e.g. Wise and similar) | many corridors from PL | often cheaper FX + small fixed fee; same day | frequent smaller remittances (verify current prices before each transfer) |
| Multi-currency card/account spending | in person abroad | per-transaction FX spread ~1–3% | travel spending, not remittances |
What to watch out for
- FX spread vs. flat fee: a "5 PLN transfer" can still cost 2% on conversion — compare the total (fee + converted amount), not just the fee.
- Correspondent bank fees: in SWIFT corridors the recipient-side bank may deduct its own commission — tell the recipient what to expect, or ask for "OUR" handling if available.
- AML monitoring: transfers above roughly 10,000 EUR equivalent (one-off or pattern) can trigger a routine request for source of funds. Having your contract/salary proof ready saves weeks — see why accounts get frozen.
- No legal limit on personal remittances, but declaring large one-off flows keeps everything smooth.
Worked example (indicative)
- Sending 5,000 PLN ≈ 1,150 EUR home: via SEPA from a PL account — ~0–15 PLN fee; the amount is converted at the bank's FX rate.
- Via a remittance service: typically a smaller FX margin than the bank; total cost often a few tens of PLN lower on this size.
- Via SWIFT to USD: ~15–40 PLN + spread + possible correspondent fee — usually the most expensive for this size, better for large or non-EUR corridors.
